A cute boy

Past Sunday I finally went to visit Fernanda and gave her the Baby Surprise Jacket. Khalil almost outgrew one more outfit I knitted. First was the owl vest and matching hat, now the jacket, I tell ya, that baby is nine-month-old but he probably wears 2 or 3 (toddlers size). Silly me, I thought knitting a 9-month outfit would fit him.
The garment fit but the hat ran a little on a small side.
I got kinda of disappointed, the yarn I used was not cheap and I thought this time I would have caught up with his growing. Not at my knitting pace though!
Khalil is an adorable baby. He smiles all the time, he sleeps all night long and is almost too perfect to be true.
I really wanted to give him something made by me but at same time, something he would get the most wear out of it. Maybe he might be able to wear it tightly in the winter, babies seem to grow upwards faster than outwards.

50 days of pain

Credits: everything from denin & daisies
I’ve been in bed for about a month and 20 days. My knitting has slowed down because in part, I am not 100% back into my physical shape and not out of pain yet. Sitting down has been challenging and I cannot knit lying down in bed.
Besides, the pain gets on my nerve and irritates me to a point I want to throw my knitting needles and all my 500 skeins out of the window.
I have never been incarcerated, but people like Marta Stewart got in-home incarcerated, she had to wear those GPS bracelets. You got green you’re in safe zone, if you accidentally
go beyond the perimeter, red light flashes and you have to get your butt back inside the safe zone.
Well, in my case, I try to move around, to do the resistance band, do my abs, my walking, but when it starts hurting, I’ve got to get my butt back in bed and take it easy.
So, the only thing that distracts me and takes my mind away from all this misery is my computer. I am glued to him 25/7 and it keeps me so busy I don’t see where time goes to.
I have learned a lot about Photoshop and I embedded the subtitles to my first translated movie. It is not perfect yet, I’ll get better by practicing. The process is long and sometimes I get tired and go back to my Photoshop tutorials. I love doing both.
I am posting 2 new layouts today.

Credits: I learned and created the tape technique from an online tutorial.

Eu amo fazer as duas coisas.
Hoje estou postando dois novos layouts.

Labor Day

Everything from:Denin and Daisies – from sunshine designers

I’ve been feeling much better for the past few days. For one, August is past gone and I feel relieved and prepared to breath the fresh air of September. Superstitious or not, August has never been a lucky month for me.
Secondly, I’ve been taking some scrapbook classes online and just over the last few days, I’ve learned new skills such as: clipping mask, how to make and save styles, cut out brushes, stitching, torn paper effects, add path to text. Now I am feeling more confident with my abilities. My next challenge is going deeper into extracting pictures and doing collage.
There are tons of beautiful layouts I get inspiration from.
I don’t mind there is no money coming in for this. I feel productive and learning more photoshop really does no hurt. Past week alone I finished off three layouts and I am posting one of them today.

Serendipity

"Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you've found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for." Lawrence Block

Sometimes life throws us a curve pushing us out of our comfort zone. I was used to my life and its natural routine. Now, it seems that I need to redefine myself and overcome obstacles and cross new bridges. It is scary and right now nothing shows up in the horizon; neither a light nor a path that leads me to a new beginning.
Perhaps its still not the right time, maybe what I am looking for is not my answer. Yes, I need that moment of serendipity. That moment when everything comes together and we find the answer to our prayers.
In the meantime, there is nothing else I can do but finish my UFOs. My baktus project is finished and I also knitted a more summery version of another baktus pattern. It can be worn in those sizzling days of summer and it is a nice compliment to a tank top or a tee-shirt. I think the batktus is way too big and boring, so I added some studs to give it that extra punch.
Finally I am feeling better and out of pain. The process is slow and doctors say I’ll feel much better after the 2nd epidural.
Everyday I train with a resistance band to help me to strengthen and build back muscle.
The Telemark pullover is almost off the needles and I don’t have any recipient in mind for this one.

Finalmente estou me sentindo melhor e sem dor.

Off my feet

image: here

Many times we find ourselves going about our days, so caught up in our routine of scheduling, to-do lists and deadlines that we forget to put into perspective what and who is truly important in our lives.
Recently, I got myself caught in a big and turbulent storm. A kind of wave of bad luck has been plaguing me lately.
First was the incident with my computer, which explains why I haven´t been able to post anything for the last few weeks. My brand new computer, Mr. Vaio was sent out to get repaired and it took more than a month to get back in; unrepaired. The good news is that the store gave me a new computer. However, if I want to retrieve my data, I have to pay $130 so they can take my hard drive apart and restore the data. Now it comes the second part of the drama.
And then three weeks ago, the unthinkable happened to me. One Saturday morning, I woke up and I felt this weird and sharp pain in my back. I went about my day ignoring the pain and hoping I would feel better later.
Still not feeling right, I decided to take a nap in the afternoon. At dusk I got up and off to the kitchen I went to grab a bite to eat. What had started out as a simple and ordinary day, ended up as the most and worst pain I have ever experienced.
First, I felt a sort of a shooting pain that went from my lower back all the way down to my legs and after trying a few steps back to bed, my legs gave out. My husband had to carry me back to bed where I went through the night without knowing if it was cramps, or what the heck had broken inside me.
Next day, my husband took me to the hospital. At that point I could no longer stand upright or sit.
Upon arrival at the hospital Emergency ward, a staffer came out to move me from the car. Norman asked him to use a stretcher since I was in so much pain. He totally disregarded his request and placed me on a wheel chair.
Inside the hospital, He went through the endless bureaucracy of filling out forms, while I struggled with the pain. It was embarrassing and I avoided looking at people in the waiting room. Clearly the only one in extreme agonizing pain was I, who begged to being placed in a flat surface.
After a few minutes, I went on a sort of shock which made me Norman to decide to remove me from there to another hospital. At that point it was clear to me and everybody else in the room, that that emergency should not be rendered on first come, first served basis. It was awful and scary at same time not knowing what I was dealing with. The services rendered at the hospital made me even more uncertain of my fate.
I was admitted and after doping me for the pain, they performed a Cat-Scan to rule out the three culprits: gallbladder, kidney Stone or appendicitis. Although it came negative for all three I was still in pain. They discharged me saying they just could do so much.
Next day I went to my family doctor. I had a herniated disc that had ruptured. Since then I have been in and out doctor’s offices and chiropractors.
But the point I want to make is the realization of how much we take simple things in life for granted. My legs take me everywhere, like second nature. They are always there for me: to do the walking, the driving, and the moving. Now I depend on a friend who I will always be grateful for. Rianne has helped me not only emotionally, because she is a lot of fun and uplifts me, but also because she comes out of her way to take me everywhere I need to go. She lights up the room and does not intensify my depression by becoming depressed. She takes my mind off my ordeal just by saying: you are going to pull it off!
God, my friends, my customers, my chiropractor and my faith catapult me forward and give me hope that I will get better soon. Now the best I can do is to wait for the big swell to pass.
The bottom line is I am typing these words while lying down in my bed drinking green tea ( from time to time) and sparkling water, I pray 24 hours to get rid of all mind virus and get back my mental and physical health!
Agora vem a segunda parte do drama.
No dia seguinte, meu marido me levou para o hospital.

Kill or get killed

Monday Face

All my favorite teams are out now. This weekend was draining and disappointing. Argentina and Germany, Brazilian archrivals teams advanced and joined Ghana,Portugal, Spain, Holand, Paraguay and Brazil in the last eight.
USA is also out and I feel sorry for Donovan, but this is a game one cannot play alone.
Now my hope is on my own team Brazil, who plays today against Chile. I believe we have hard worker players and I hope they play their best and show more commitment than in their last game against Portugal.
I am definitely holding judgment until Brazil plays again, this time against Chile! We will either see a more motivated team or the same old team who struggles to make passes and kick the ball fast from one side to the other.
Dunga annoys me with his constant excuses and refuses to have a reality check on his players performances. Is it called denial?

Baby Surprise Jacket

baby surprise tutorial

I decided to knit a fold-over collar on the surprise jacket. Beginning at the left button band, pick up 46 stitches along the collar.
(RS) Slip 1, Knit 1, M1, knit across
(WS) Knit * Repeat until you have 4 ridges
After 4 ridges, increase 5 stitches only across the back section.
I increased every 3 stitches right after the shoulder seam. (between shoulders).
Continue increasing in the beginning of every RS and increase on the back 2 more times for a little depth on the back.
Then, keep on knitting straight until you have 8 ridges. Bind off. I used the I-Cord Bind Off.

Arrematei. Eu usei o arremate I-Cord.

What really matters

In the spirit of World Cup, I’d rather not even comment on Sunday’s game. Yeah, the important thing is to win, I am just old school. I enjoy a clean, classy and professional game. Team players should refrain from throwing tantrums and focus on kicking the ball and not the team mates.
Last night, both teams didn’t put on a good game. The players charged each other more than played ball. Kaka is out of the next game against Portugal and our fate only God knows! We booked our place in the knock-out phase though!
Play on and stop whining!
Every four year I look forward to having fun with the World Cup games, to feeling proud of my country and to cheering up for my team. The truth of the matter is that I don't believe the couch made a right choice with the players of this team but despite this tiny detail, I love watching all the games and in high spirits I post about this gal here. Check her out and her World Cup decoration and tips to make your parties more beautiful and fun. Ah, she even uploaded this cute flags to decorate your table, house or anything else you can think of .
Have fun!!! Go get a Vuvuzela horn and make your neighbors call the cops on you!!

Eu me divirto, me sinto orgulhosa do meu país e torço pro meu time, independentemente se o técnico fez a escolha certa com a formação do time ou não.

Revenge is a dish best served cold

This guy here, Mr.Lemos, wrote it beautifully and I freely translated it:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:2.
There was only love, peace, harmony and tolerance. Life went quiet on the planet for nearly two millennia. But then came 1998 and 2009, France won over Brazil in two World Cups and stole the Irish a chance to take part in the next tournament. This chain of events unleashed violence that cheered the devil who everybody knows thrives on anger, hatred and rancor. Then, came the year of 2010 and Mexico, under the baton of the devil himself gave us a sweet REVENGE. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Me gusta scargot, quiche and champagne but France, forgive my flipping the bird!”
Gole, Gole, Gole, Gole, Mexxxxiccooooooo!!!!!

World Cup Fever

Behold! June has just started and with it. .. 2010 World Cup!
As everybody has noticed, the World Cup started this weekend and my nails have been bitten right down to the roots. My team hasn’t even played yet.
It is always the same long-suffering ordeal, and now double-suffering, because I LOVE my Brazilian team, but I am rooting for the American team as well. I just watched the game USA x England – end score – 1x1. An historical result for the USA! It was impossible not being captivated by the amazing game. USA came a long way, and their players have not disappointed. They gave everything they had, heart and passion, sweat and blood. They made an effort and this effort was worth them a precious 1 point.
I don’t know whether or not my heart will resist throughout the tournament. I am Brazilian, born and raised like one, but I have adopted the USA as my country of choice. I love this country, these people and their culture. I am used to joking that I am step child of Uncle Sam.
The only thing I don’t want to happen is a match between Brazil and USA. Hope to God! And I’ll keep on chewing… In the meantime a Hip, Hip, Huha to U.S.A! Brazil is going to play against North Corea – Tuesday.
The Baby Surprise Jacket is almost off the needles! This was a very gratifying project, almost like solving a huge math problem. I was very skeptical when I began, but then, close to the end, I see the nonsense taking shape of a jacket. Although the pattern says there’s neither breaking-offs nor joining-ins of wool, mine shows a lot of both. I had to improvise because I ran out of the main color. It was a sort of working in the dark, I didn’t know exactly what to expect every time I added a new color and how the work would turn out. Literally it is a surprise from the beginning to the end. Absolutely, I will be knitting this fun jacket a hundred times over …

O Brasil vai jogar contra a Coréia do Norte - Terça-feira.

Why people help

I know this is not the most exciting subject for a blog but when I heard the media criticizing Gary Coleman’s wife for not helping him, (after a fatal fall, the actor allegedly bled intensively from a blow to his head), a memory from a certain day came back to haunt me .
According to Myers, Exploring Social Psychology: "People will help when the benefits (social approval and noble feelings) are greater that the costs (the inconvenience of having to help)".Bull#@#@#, people help when they have the courage to do so. In my case, many years ago when I was a senior, on my way to school, I experienced a weird situation that confirmed my conviction.
I usually walked to school and that day I had walked 4 blocks away from home, when I saw a man, lying on the sideways, convulsing. He was about eighty hundred feet from me, I couldn’t think straight and immediately I started screaming for help, or I thought I was… no sound was coming out of my mouth. In other words, I got paralyzed, in total panic.
Somehow, after a few seconds I stepped out of my torpor and ran back home. After telling my mom, we both got in the car and went back to the place and the man was no longer there. There were a few bystanders hanging out, and one of them helped him. The man had had a seizure.
Remembering this episode makes me feel terrible. The matter of the truth is that I freaked out, I didn’t have any training in CPR and my mom said I would have probably caused more damage than help if I had tried to help him. Helloooowww!!! Obviously she was trying to make me feel less guilty!
I leave judgment to God. He is the one who is going to say, Oh, that sinner who lives on the top of the hill in that cul-de-sac...
Until today I pray for that man. I hope he made it. The simply thought I haven’t tried to help the man always piss me off. Anyways... changing gears from my past memoirs to more updated news...
The baby surprise jacket is in progress and I am also knitting a baktus.

Baby Surprise Jacket

Sempre que me lembro desse episódio me sinto péssima.

End of Spring

My husband once said he couldn’t ever live in a claustrophobic flat without a yard and a garage. I have to admit I agree with him, not because I love working on the yard, I am not that type of gal who likes to stuff my nails with dirty. Primadona? Yeap.
But I take pride in my husband’s landscape skills. He spends endless hours, gathering leaves and branches, mowing the lawn, seedling and transplanting beautiful flowers in various colors. All season long, I am mesmerized, every time I open the front door and look at the stunning flowers and greenery. First blooms are always the camellias, then the tulips and roses, daffodils and daisies and finally the variegated hydrangeas. A parade to put the Rose Parade to shame.
From March until late May, our little home is a mixture of green and color everywhere. Sometimes, for me who lived ⅔ of my life in apartments in big cities, is almost like a dream living in a house with a front yard and back porch.
I have my privacy, my lone moments, my flowers and my trees. What else can I ask for?................. A Pool?

Eu tenho minha privacidade, meus momentos solitários, as minhas flores e minhas árvores. O que mais eu posso querer?.............. Uma piscina?

The owl vest is already off the needles and does not fit Fernanda’s baby. He’s only 5 months old, but he is wearing an equivalent of a 2 year-old boy(exaggerating a bit)- Oh, well… there I go once again try to knit something that fits him. I decided for the surprise baby jacket from Zimmermann’s book, The Opinionated Knitter and this time, it’d better to fit, because this yarn is way too pricey and it is the best yarn I have ever bought.
I got it two weeks ago and I felt in love with it. I am seriously contemplating buying a different colorway for future projects. The lady from the store seems to be a nice lady and after sending her an e-mail thanking her for the stunning yarn she wrote me back a short and sweet note:
“Thanks Gisley!
I really needed that email. My heart is all warm and fuzzy. I have a teen so this is a rare and wonderful state for me to treasure! I’m really glad you like your yarn. That’s *so* important to me!
Meg aka Twisted Dyer"
Of course I will go back to buy from her again. Of cooourse!!!! Yeap! Like I need an excuse to buy more yarn....
By the way, I love exotic tastes and this past weekend I made a shrimp and green apple salad and it was served with this dressing:

Apple and Shrimp Salad
Ingredients
2 lbs. shrimp, cooked and peeled
4 medium apples, (Granny Smith, unpeeled and cubed)
4 ripe avocados
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup ketchup
6 drops of hot sauce
2 Tbsp. cognac
2 Tbsp. dry sherry
2 tsp. Cherchies® Lem'n Dill Seasoning

---------------------------------------

●Cut shrimp into 2 to 3 pieces. Set aside in mixing bowl. ●Slice avocado in half, discard the pit. Scoop out avocado meat with a spoon (you will use the shell for serving). Cube avocado meat and add apples and avocado to the shrimp in mixing bowl. ●In a separate bowl, blend remaining ingredients to make a dressing. Add this dressing to shrimp mixture and toss to coat evenly. ●Spoon salad mixture into avocado shells. ●Place the shells on a bed of lettuce before serving.

Serves 8(I modified by not using avocado, cognac and sherry)

I eyeball the ingredients and by doing so, the first bite tasted a little spicy, so watch out for the amount of hot sauce.
This salad is perfect to be savored with a nice glass of dry white wine. Enjoy it!!

A knit-addict

double heart scarf

Lately I’ve been feeling a bit like a train wreck and my only source of energy has been engrossing myself in knitting. Since the first day I learned how to knit, I haven’t stopped. First it was three hours a day, then five, sometimes the whole weekend. I became a knit-addict. Yes, I self assessed my condition: I am an addict/compulsive knitter, greedy for more and more yarn and seriously in need of quitting buying them. I realized, the more I do nothing, the more addicted and compulsive I get.
I look at my house, dust everywhere, baths in need to be scrubbed, floors in need to be mopped, piles of clothes waiting to be washed, dried and folded … and what do I do? I just stare at the mess ... in total boredom and just nod my head and can’t help to feel is all the same every day! Tired! I'm tired of the same old, same old! At least I do knitting. Oh my knitting, my blessed knitting. Thank God and the internet I learned how to knit. Knitting away every piece, every minute is a gift that saves me, that makes me happy, that lifts me up (even with all the bad news I hear everywhere) that inspires me to live.
I admire every knitter who patiently has taught this craft through various blogs on the net. I thank every knitter for their passion to knitting and for passing on so many precious lessons, tips and specially the "free patterns". I bow to all knitters with creativity and a keen eye for transforming a single skein of yarn in such beautiful pieces that bring happiness to others.

owl tuque and froggy

Tornei-me uma tricociada.
Exausta! Estou exausta da mesma coisa, da mesma rotina! Pelo menos eu faço tricô. Ah, meu tricô, tricô meu abençoado. Graças à Deus e à internet eu aprendi a fazer tricô.

A sweet dog

Woof, woof! We took possession of Fifi for a week while her parents are on vacation.
She is still adjusting to her temporary house but she has a favorite spot. She loves lying down on the couch, on the top of the pillows. Uncle Norm yells at her every time – “Get off the couch, Get off the couch, Fifi!” but she is smart and somehow manages to win him over with lots of kisses. In the end, she gets away with crime!
The best time of the day for her is when either Norm or I come home and take her for a walk. Her bobtail can’t stop- it goes side to side, round and round, up and down and she gives us lots of kisses! Life is good!
Ruff, Ruff!!

Owl vest

The owl vest is in blocking phase. I simply loved knitting it and the yarn I chose has not disappointed me. The yarn is the Gramercy from Lily Chin, color 7543. To tell the truth, I’ve never knitted with such adorable and butter soft yarn like this before. It just glides over the needle and its malleability and drape is incredible.
Another lesson I learned with this project was to knit English style. It became so much easier for me, and I realized I was knitting totally crooked because I wasn’t knitting using neither Continental, nor English style. I don’t know what type of mess I was doing before, but I fixed it.
Every time I knitted on the round and had to switch to straight needles, the fabric ended up always slanted to the left where I was knitting on the round. I figured that out when I was knitting the evening shrug but I couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong. Well… now I know!
After blocking it and sewing the buttons up, I’ll post the pictures.
In the meantime, I was looking for tutorials on the double knitting technique and I couldn’t find anyone with clear and straight forward instructions. I started google-ing and found this site, Winter Foliage. Teaching is truly an art and few people master it. This lady, Miss Katie, is one of them. She nailed it. Merci!!
Some knitters who also knitted the vest:
Sereknitty, Westerly Whimsies, Thing 4 String, Sammy4586, Three Little Purls
